10 Essential Skin Care Habits

We all have that one friend who has insanely flawless skin. (And we're all jealous.) How could it be that we're so different? The truth is we're not. It all comes down to the basic habits that we embody on a day-to-day basis. We've put together 10 essential skin care habits that you should learn to love.

1. Drink Water 24/7

I drink more than 8 cups of water a day. In my experience it really comes down to drinking the right liquids. Whenever I see a Starbucks or a vending machine, I choose to drink water instead. Your wallet will thank you too.

2. Don't Touch Your Face

You would be amazed by the number of times you touch your face on a given day. I just touched mine again. The dirt and germs that pile up as a result cause breakouts, wrinkles, and ultimately scarring. If you're obsessed with touching your face, make sure to keep the hands clean.

3. Wear Sunscreen 365 Days A Year

Your weather app may determine what you wear every day, but it certainly shouldn't decide whether you put on sunscreen. It is extremely important to do so rain or shine. Daily UV exposure is the main source of aging. If you're out all day, don't forget to reapply it every 2 hours.

4. Go Beyond The Sunscreen

Although your skin will thank you for the sunscreen 365 days a year, it just isn't enough. Don't hesitate to go after sunglasses and hats to provide that additional layer of protection against UV rays. Prevention is simply better than cure.

5. Keep A Healthy Diet

I personally love flax seeds and walnuts because omega-3 fatty acid does an awesome job of ensuring that our skin holds onto the much needed moisture, especially throughout the fall and winter. Remember to stay away from spicy, fried, and salty. At the end of the day, the blander the better.

6. Take Your Vitamins

Vitamins not only keep your skin glowing, but also protect it from the inside out. After all, your skin is a good representation of your inner health. Antioxidants commonly found in vitamins do an effective job of repairing and protecting the inner skin cells.

7. Stay Active All Day

Good blood circulation is your best friend when it comes to healthy skin. I practice the habit of getting up to stretch and walk around at least once every hour. You may have to constantly remind yourself to do so at first, but it becomes a nice part of your daily routine over time. Trust me, it's worth it.

8. Reduce Your Bath Time

I used to be a big fan of long, hot showers at the end of the day. Although I still am deep down, I avoid doing so because it is one of the worst things for your skin. At the end of the shower, your skin is missing its protective oils and horrendously dehydrated. It's essentially a shortcut to aging.

9. Avoid Heaters And Fireplaces

While it can get very chilly during the fall and winter, staying close to heaters and fireplaces does an extensive amount of damage to your skin. If you want to avoid dry skin and collagen breakdowns, you should remind yourself to take a step back next time.

10. Get Good Sleep

We've all gotten the message by now that it's important to sleep eight hours a night. It is also recommended that we create a suitable environment to sleep in. This points to regularly cleaning your bed sheets, perhaps using trendy silk pillowcases, and leaving your iPhone away from the bed.
